A Regression Approach to Fairer Grading
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper, we consider an issue of great interest to all students: fairness in grading. Specifically, we represent each grade as a student’s intrinsic (overall) aptitude minus a correction representing the course’s inherent difficulty plus a statistical error. We consider two statistical methods for assigning an aptitude to each student and, simultaneously, a measure of difficulty to each course: (1) we minimize the sum of squares of the errors and (2) we minimize the sum of the absolute values of those errors. We argue that by accounting for course difficulty, we arrive at a measure of aptitude that is fairer than the usual grade-point-average metric. At the same time, the measures of course difficulty can be used to inform instructors as to how their courses compare to others. The two particular models presented are examples of least-squares and leastabsolute-deviation regression and can be used in the classroom to motivate an interest in regression in general and to illustrate the pros and cons of these two approaches to the regression problem. Online Judge
This report describes and evaluates the implementation and applicability of an automatic programming assignment grading system we named the online judge. We compared this with the manual grading system that is currently being used and showed that the automatic grading system, when implemented carefully, is more convenient, fairer, and more secure than the former. We have successfully tested the...
متن کاملThe Arguments and Data in Favor of Minimum Grading
The arguments and for and against minimum grading systems have grown increasingly more intense and acrimonious in the past decade. However, there has been an absence of empirical data, theory and clear comparative analyses of conflicting points of view. Critics of minimum grading contend that the practice will produce grade inflation and social promotions of those students receiving minimum gra...
متن کاملVisual grading regression: analysing data from visual grading experiments with regression models.
For visual grading experiments, which are an easy and increasingly popular way of studying image quality, hitherto used data analysis methods are often inadequate. Visual grading analysis makes assumptions that are not statistically appropriate for ordinal data, and visual grading characteristic curves are difficult to apply in more complex experimental designs. The approach proposed in this pa...
متن کاملHow Can a Global Social Support System Hope to Achieve Fairer Competiveness?; Comment on “A Global Social Support System: What the International Community Could Learn From the United States’ National Basketball Association”
Ooms et al sets out some good general principles for a global social support system to improve fairer global competitiveness as a result of redistribution. This commentary sets out to summarize some of the conditions that would need to be satisfied for it to level up gradients in inequality through such a social support system, using the National Basketball Association (NBA) example as a point ...

OBJECTIVE To determine the factors contributing most to variability in patient experience in order to present approaches for fairer benchmarking of hospitals and for quality improvement. DESIGN Secondary analysis of data from a widely used survey on patient experience. SETTING Inpatients from all 24 acute hospitals in the Canton of Bern in Switzerland. Data collection followed the standardi...
